One Of The Biggest Dilemmas When Buying A Stair Lift Is Whether To Purchase New Or Used.

The Real Question may be different than what you may think.

Here is the Real Question!

Is It Cheaper to Buy New or Is It Cheaper to Buy Used?

How Much the Stairlift will Cost to Own Over Time!

Please Read On

There are tempting deals being advertised at every turn. In these dynamic economic times, does the conventional wisdom still ring true, that it is cheaper to buy used than new?

Please Read On

Our analysis provided a fresh, and even surprising, insight.

  • In some cases, with a slight increase in monthly payment, you can get a new stairlift without the used stairlift mileage and with a full manufacturer's warranty.

  • An example illustrates that especially when speaking to the manufacturer’s client advisor that certain options and opportunities are available that could be worth choosing a new stairlift over a used one, but it's important to do your research. There is not a single sound-bite solution that complements all scenarios.

  • While purchase price is a natural focus, don't look solely at the cost to buy, but how much the stairlift will cost to own over time. Factors such as depreciation, financing, energy costs and other operating service and repair expenses can quickly add up through the years and may make that deal not look so good after all. Seek advice from the client advisor.

How Much Does an Acorn Stairlift Cost?

Because every staircase is different and each person's requirements differ, Acorn Stairlifts will design your stairlift especially for you based on your individual staircase dimensions, unique specifications and options that will suit your needs and budget. Because of this, it would be misleading to quote a stairlifts cost price on our website.

The following are some factors that can affect the stairlifts prices:

  • Are stairs straight or curved?

  • Bends in the staircase

  • Distance your stair lift will travel

  • Number of steps on the stairs

  • Landings at top, middle and bottom of the staircase

  • Stair lift features and options required for your needs

  • Width of the stair steps

Once your staircase has been surveyed, you will be given your own free, no-obligation written quotation. It is then entirely your decision - in your own time - to decide whether an Acorn Stairlift is right for you.

At Acorn, your safety and independence is the priority. Acorn is here to help anyone who is struggling with their stairs regain freedom and independence. Why not call one of our friendly, experienced advisors at 800-259-0370 for a Free, No Hassle, No-Obligation Survey and Price Quote and a factory-trained Acorn Stairlifts surveyor will measure your stairs, explain all the options available, and answer any questions you may have, in Acorn Service Areas*.

Acorn has manufactured and supplied stairlifts to hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers worldwide. With their vast knowledge and expertise, you will receive the best possible experience - from the first contact through the installation process.

For your FREE Acorn Survey and Consultation*, one of Acorn Stairlifts' friendly, experienced Acorn Stairlifts Official Specialists will personally meet with you, assess your specific needs, measure your stairs, answer all of your questions, discuss your particular situation, advise you on the options available and provide a personalized quote. You will be able to review the quotation at your leisure and discuss it with anyone else you choose.

Acorn is dedicated to help you learn how a stairlift can help you regain your safety and independence and then it is up to you - in your own time - to decide if a stairlift is right for you.

How Much Does a Stairlift Cost and the Cost to Run?

How much are they?
Costs vary for a new lift depending on the staircase.
Things to consider:
  • Current shape, length and height of stairs
  • Landings and doorways
  • Electrical points
These points will affect the price of any installation. These points need to be covered when speaking to a stairlift surveyor.
What options are available?
  • Hinged rails; are available where the chairlift’s rail will obstruct a doorway, usually at the foot of the stairs.
  • Outdoor; weather proofed for use around the home.
  • Remote controls; twin remotes - one for downstairs and one for upstairs, a must to call the lift.
How much do they cost to run?
The cost of utilities always seems to be on the rise. Considering the running costs of a stairlift is a major factor. On average, a stairlift is used four times per day.
Different factors to consider are the size and power of the motor and how far it has to travel. Is the stairlift constantly plugged in or does it draw power as it needs it?
Some models of stairlift draw power from a point on the rail which trickle charges the lift and keeps the on-board battery topped up.
Depending on the above, the average cost is as much as running a low energy light bulb per day. You are not going to see a massive increase in your electric bill if you have a stairlift installed.

  • Stair Lift is Made to Order — Chances are, you can spec a new stairlift just the way you want it, or at least have the manufacturer client advisor recommend the right solution of necessary options and features.

  • It’s Not Used — A new stairlift is custom measured to your staircase and fits perfectly to your stairs, is safe to ride, has all of the safety features, hasn’t had any abuse of excess weight capacity, hasn’t been mistreated by unknown users, doesn’t ride misaligned, has seen no wear or tear, and comes with a fresh history that includes only being ridden by you.

  • Warranty — Like the rest of the stair lift, the new stairlift’s warranty is untouched. It’s the best comprehensive warranty you can get—without paying extra—and will be the one that comes with a new stairlift from the manufacturer.

  • Latest Devices — The newer the stairlift, the more modern the technology that’s packed inside. Modern interfaces are constantly evolving and improving, so if you have to have the latest in safety and technology the selection will be better in the new-stairlift department.

  • Safety — As stairlift safety laws become ever more stringent, stair lift makers are forced to change the way stair lifts are built and the safety systems with which they are equipped.

  • Higher Efficiency and Lower Operating Costs — Again, partly thanks to cutting edge technology, stairlifts are largely getting more efficient, even while simultaneously getting more powerful. The newest stairlifts are safer than ever before, and choices of solution options are growing, too.

  • Durability and Endurance —The cheaper stair lift might not turn out to be the better deal in the long run.

  • Maintenance — New stairlifts, mainly those from the top manufacturer include maintenance free battery operation. This built-in cost savings should be considered in the final price analysis.

Here are Some Important Common Problems with Used Stair Lifts
and Pre-owned, Recycled, Refurbished, and Reconditioned Stair Lifts

  • Stair lift user physical needs and necessary requirements are not met by the actual used stair lift model’s limited features
  • Used Stairlift rail mount is not designed or intended to fit on the correct side of the buyer’s staircase stairway application
  • Stairlift rail is not long enough to meet the site conditions
  • Used stair lift ‘features’ are not sufficient to deal with the specific wants and demands of the stairlift user
  • Used stairlift track does not fit the width of the staircase steps
  • Stair lift parts are no longer available from the stairlift manufacturer for the outdated stairlift model
  • There are no sufficient local installation companies to properly service and support the used stairlift model
  • The used stairlift seat does not lock in the lock position. The stairlift will not operate.
  • The used stairlift footrest in the past has hit an obstruction on the stairs causing problems with the stairlift operation; the stairlift suddenly stops in the middle of the staircase with no warning.
  • The used stairlift seat chassis extends beyond the final limit stop switch and the stairlift battery won’t charge all the time.
  • Used stairlift does not properly engage the charging strip and the stairlift often dies anywhere on the stairs with no power to run the stairlift.
  • A defective power supply causes the stairlift to stop working and is an issue for an additional cost of parts and labor. The power supply was not covered under the used stairlift warranty.
  • Used stair lift battery dies sooner than expected for an additional cost of two new batteries and the work of replacement.
  • Used stair lift intermittently and unexpectedly stops along the track stranding the passenger on the stairway.
  • The original stair lift manufacturer will not honor the used stair lift warranty because their product was not installed by an authorized trained dealer. The local manufacturer dealer will not service it because it was not installed by them..
  • Inexperienced stair lift installation. Cannot get the stairlift to operate. Stairlift operation failure and result entails additional time and money
  • Original Manufacturer’s warranty does not carry over to the next owner.
  • An additional expense for parts and labor for repair or to resolve any used stairlift glitches.
  • Used stairlift was not well-maintained and is not in good shape.
  • Used stairlift does not fit precisely to the next user's home staircase
  • Used stairlift does not fit properly with environmental obstacles to the staircase like an upper or lower door at the end of the staircase steps or someone may trip over the track at the bottom of the steps.
  • Used stairlift does not always work properly
  • Used stairlift does not meet the family’s needs.
  • Unforeseen additional cost for repair for labor and parts
  • Used stairlift often breaks down
  • The used stairlift’s condition is a safety issue for the user
  • Repairs of additional cost of labor and parts for the used stairlift exceeds the original budget
  • Seller does not stand behind the product as promised and will not issue a refund
  • The stairlift keeps breaking down but the seller will not support the problem within their offered warranty without paying an additional cost outlay for parts and labor not covered under the limited warranty
  • The used stairlift warranty does not cover all parts and labor
  • An extended warranty for maintenance and parts is not offered after the initial purchase date.
  • The used warranty time period was too short and consumer can’t afford an extended warranty plan to fix the problem.
  • The used stairlift seller did not provide for local service or a local service technician to come to the home
  • Local service or a local service technician will come to the home but with an added expense of travel time and cost for repairs for time and labor and parts.
  • Emergency appointment cancellations and ‘repair service vehicle broke down’ excuses are all too frequent. Can’t rely on the used stairlift seller's service. Seller subcontracts the service out anyway and sometimes the service technician has never worked on this model of stairlift before.
  • Received the used stairlift in several boxes, without proper directions or any real support included. Also parts were missing.
  • The stairlift was not refurbished as promised with brand new original manufacturer parts replacing the worn parts.
  • The manufacturer technician inspection, paid extra for, states that the used stairlift purchased has not been rebuilt to the manufacturer specifications and that certain parts are worn and should have been replaced to bring the used stairlift up to the manufacturer’s standards. The seller won’t take the stairlift back and consumer is stuck with an unsafe used stairlift with no recourse.
  • The local stairlift company refuses to work on the used stairlift because they did not install it.
  • The local professional stairlift technician states has never worked with this particular used stairlift equipment before and has no proper technical training on the unit and also states it is an older technology model.
  • Stairlift is unsafe or may cause an accident.
  • Technical repair company recommends that the older used stair lift is more expensive to repair and consumer should purchase another stair lift. User cannot afford to buy another stairlift.
  • Certain local state or counties have no regulations on stair lifts and lack the resources and knowledge of stairlifts to help the buyer with the seller, which is not supporting a self-installation of a used stairlift. Consumer doesn't know what to do. Cannot get the stairlift to work properly. The seller will not refund the money.
  • A user needs to but cannot get access to the upstairs. The used stairlift is not working most of the time, and user cannot often get upstairs to sleep in the bedroom and use the upstairs bathroom and shower. User is often trapped on the downstairs level and cannot afford another stairlift.
  • The warranty the seller provided on the used stairlift purchased differs from the manufacturer’s warranty. The warranty doesn’t cover the rack (track) and all of the components (parts) of the unit. If something goes wrong that is not covered under the warranty, consumer has to pay for shipment of parts, parts, technician travel time and labor as an additional expense.
  • Consumer wishes had bought a reliable stairlift. Didn’t save money as expected. Cannot afford another stairlift and can’t deal with all of the 'hassle'.
  • Customer bought the least expensive used stairlift they could buy and didn’t know that it isn’t of modern safety design.
  • Used stair lift is noisy and a cable inside rattles. Stair lift cable and gears often needs to be lubricated oiled for maintenance.
  • Certain older technology used stairlifts are not of maintenance-free operation and the consumer must take rags to clean and to also oil the stair lift gears. Not being a sealed unit oil or lubricant will often leak or spill on the floor. Consumer often feels the used stairlift was not a good bargain with this extra concern.
  • Consumer purchases a used stairlift and cannot self-install the stairlift properly.
  • Service technician explains the used stairlift recently purchased has been utilized a lot and that parts are not going to last much longer without needing replacement. States the used stairlift had gone through a lot of ‘cycles’ up and down the stairs and that consumer should expect costly maintenance and an expensive motor replacement.
  • Used stairlift purchased does not have a safety swivel seat. Cannot retrofit one. It’s difficult and not comfortable for the user to swivel around on the fixed seat. Difficult for the user to dismount stairlift at the bottom and top of the stairs. Newer technology stairlifts have a swivel seat. It would be much easier for the user if it had a swivel seat.
  • Told later that the used stair lift purchased had not been serviced regularly and because of the age of the stair lift, cannot buy an effective extended service maintenance agreement plan.
  • Case Study #1: "Bought a pre-owned cable driven used stairlift that is noisy, jerks and stops a lot of the time. The repairman said this issue is due to the dryness of the gears, through time, as well as the accumulation of dust and residue through consistent use. Technician states problem can be repaired by means of applying a lubricant on the gears to retain rolling smoothness and by regular dusting and cleaning the stairlift.  Technician said that mold and mildew, when not removed, can cause the cables to wither and become brittle. The gear teeth may also turn rusty, which in turn reduces efficient lifting.  I paid around a thousand dollars for a used stairlift and thought that it was a good value. It hasn’t been a good stair lift at all. Technician said that old cable stairlifts are not maintenance-free and are outdated and suggested I change to a new design battery operated stairlift."
  • Case Study #2: Customer resorted to buying a used stairlift mostly to save money. Thought that buying a ‘good used stair lift’ would lower the price. A possible bad  decision. The money factor compromised the quality. The used stairlift was worn out by the previous users.
  • Case Study #3: Told used stair lift was completely restored to original shape. Not so. Advertised by what seemed to be a reputable national company. Received a written warranty but received no certification inspection report like you receive a ‘Carfax history report’ with a used car from the car dealer.  I found out later that the replacement parts for my stair lift are difficult to find and that it is an older model that is no longer being manufactured. Certain parts need to be replaced and no spares are available except used salvage parts. I don’t feel safe on this stair lift.
  • Case Study #4: Reliability. Above all, I didn’t want to get a stair lift that would break down. I have enough stuff going on in my life and I want to avoid stair-lift-repair issues (time, $) as much as possible. I was willing to pay slightly more for this certainty. Why I chose a new stair lift instead of a used stair lift: value (not just cost). Sure, a new stairlift costs a little more. But over the long-term, not that much more. And the value–not just monetarily–is much higher.
  • Case Study #5: Finding a decently nice stairlift. Buying a stairlift takes an enormous amount of time. I planned to have this stairlift for many years and I don’t want a ‘lemon’. As a result, this baseline requirement reduced the disparity between new and used prices. In other words, I wouldn’t save a ton of money getting a used stairlift because I wanted a pretty good stairlift, regardless.
  • Case Study #6: "I replaced my old stairlift for a new stairlift. Stairlift Safety was the reason. Is there a better feeling on earth? Safety is really a requirement, but I just wanted to mention how much I love my brand new stairlift. I considered how much cash I’d have to put down. I put a small deposit down, charged the remaining amount to my credit card. They did have a good finance plan. I could have gone either way."
  • Case Study #7: Resale value. At first, I was resistant to this idea. After all, I would probably just ride whatever stairlift I got into the ground instead of selling it. Well, fine, it was pointed out to me, but I at least calculated what would happen if I sold it in 5 or 10 years. Here’s the trade-off: Buying an older used stairlift will save me up-front money, but it may cost me a lot more over the long-term. If I decide to buy a pretty good used stairlift, in my opinion I might as well spend a little more to mitigate the risks of stairlift repair, etc. That’s the risk/reward perspective.
  • Case Study #8: For the difference paid for added repair costs for the used stairlift, it would have been cheaper to buy a brand new stairlift which includes free installation, a comprehensive warranty for a technical service repairman to come to the home free of charge including all parts and labor
  • A used, pre-owned, secondhand, rental, restored or refurbished stairlift has previously had one or more owners. Someone buying a used stairlift does bears a higher risk, doesn't want to buy a 'lemon', and the market price tends to adjust downwards to reflect that.
  • Site complications for self-installation vary such as: rug, wood, stone or tile steps, handrail and post obstructions, longer brackets required due to inconsistent step rises, distance to plug, position of track splice and bracket placement and ease of access to the staircase, missing parts, missing instructions and questionable support.
  • To apply a broad rule that “a used stairlift is the best” may be impulsive, while a new stair lift may be a great choice for others.
  • Service on a used stairlift with worn parts is absurdly expensive. An alternate choice is to purchase a new stairlift, included with the purchase, comes a comprehensive warranty for exact free measurement and free installation, service, parts and labor backed by the manufacturer.
  • Cost vs. Value: Another perspective. You can purchase a new stairlift for a relatively low cost over the long term by doing a few sensible things. But if you actually think about this, one of the most important purchases you’ll ever make, you can save a lot of money. So do some commonsense things that will make you much happier over the long term: (1) Pick a good stairlift. There are some stairlifts that are objectively bad decisions that nobody should ever buy. (2) Pick a stairlift that is reliable and has a high reputation. (3) Seek the manufacturer client advisor advice. People rarely make bad purchase decisions after gathering sound advice. Check out all of your options and opportunities. (4) Don’t do unwise things: Treat your stairlift investment like a stock and plan to hold on to it for a long, long time. With each year you ride your stairlift you’re saving tons of money. (5) Your stairlift’s price is vastly dependent on its condition. Experiment with pricing. Evaluate the same stairlift in Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor conditions. You’ll see what I mean.
  • OK, so you decided to get a new stair lift. Now, some caveats: (1) First, don’t forget repair and service. Remember that a used stairlift has all these things, just in different amounts. (2) A new stairlift has a cost savings comprehensive new warranty. (3) With a used stairlift, the risk goes up (likelihood of repair increases, resale value decreases). (4) Here’s the bottom line: Be careful when pundits say that buying a used stairlift is the only way to go. It’s not. Buying a new stairlift can be a smart choice if you pick the right stairlift, choose extremely well, and stay disciplined about shopping and maintaining your stairlift. (It doesn’t have to be a purely numbers-oriented decision. "I love my stairlift–it’s fun to ride and if I had 10x the money, I would still get it." Because buying a stair lift is such an important purchase, "I’m fine spending a little more money and time up front to mitigate risk and get a great stairlift that will last for a long time." And by being sensible about how long you ride your stairlift for (longer is better), you can get a new stairlift for a great value.
